Five Thousand Years of China: Liao, Jin and Western Xia: Multi-Ethnic Regimes Alongside the Song
The Liao, Jin and Western Xia were multi-ethnic regimes that coexisted with the Song, and their rise changed the political pattern of China's north and northwest. The Liao was founded by the Khitan: Yelü Abaoji took the imperial throne and founded the state in 916, with the dynastic name Qidan (Khitan), later changed to Liao. Through its dual system of northern and southern administrations, the Liao governed Khitan and Han affairs separately and kept relative stability for a long period between the northern steppe and the farming regions.
In 1005, Song and Liao concluded the Treaty of Chanyuan, agreeing to exchange annual payments for border peace; thereafter Song and Liao maintained relative peace for about a century, and trade and cultural exchange developed as well. The Western Xia was founded by the Tanguts: Li Yuanhao took the imperial throne in 1038, with the state name Great Xia and his capital at Xingqing.
Western Xia created the Tangut script, developed agriculture, animal husbandry and trade along the Hexi Corridor, and manoeuvred among Song, Liao and Jin, maintaining its separatist rule for nearly two hundred years. The Jin was founded by the Jurchen: Wanyan Aguda took the imperial throne in 1115, with the state name Jin.
The Jin first joined with the Northern Song to destroy the Liao, then in 1127 destroyed the Northern Song itself, occupying the Central Plains, moving its capital to Zhongdu, and carrying out sinicizing reforms that absorbed Central Plains institutions and culture. The Southern Song and Jin later reached the Shaoxing Peace, forming a north-south standoff.
After the Mongols rose, Western Xia and Jin fell in turn — Western Xia in 1227, Jin in 1234. In culture and society, Buddhism flourished under the Liao, leaving buildings such as the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda in Shanxi, and the creation of the Khitan script reflects the people's cultural self-awareness;
after occupying the Central Plains, the Jin instituted examinations and absorbed Han officials, using the Jurchen and Chinese scripts side by side and gradually moving from nomadic customs toward the institutions of a farming society; Western Xia formed its own systems in Buddhism, law and education, and the Tangut documents excavated at places such as Khara-Khoto are important materials for studying Western Xia history today.
Economically, all three valued land reclamation and trade routes; the Liao's Nanjing (Xijin), the Jin's Zhongdu and Western Xia's Xingqing were all regional centres of their time. Though there were wars and annual payments between Song and the Liao, Jin and Western Xia, border market trade existed for a long time, with tea, horses, silk and porcelain exchanged, and popular intercourse never ceased entirely.
The existence of the Liao, Jin and Western Xia shows that Chinese history is not the linear narrative of a single people, but a process in which multiple peoples' regimes coexisted, interacted and fused; their institutions, scripts and management of the frontiers influenced the later formation of a unified multi-ethnic state.
