Texas Announces $40 Million for 411 School Systems Through PREP Program to Strengthen Teacher Workforce
Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Oct. 26 in Austin announced $40 million to 411 Texas school systems through the Preparing and Retaining Educators through Partnerships (PREP) Program Allotment. The funding will strengthen teacher recruitment, preparation and mentorship, and bolster Texas' teacher workforce.
'Texas educators shape future generations, and it is critical that they enter the classroom ready to succeed,' Governor Abbott said. 'This investment empowers schools and builds on Texas' efforts to ensure that every student has access to a high-quality education.' Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath said: 'Strong teachers are the foundation of student success, and the PREP Allotment gives Texas school systems the resources to build a stronger educator pipeline. This investment will help districts recruit talented candidates, provide meaningful preparation and mentorship, and support more educators as they begin their careers.'
The PREP Program Allotment was established by House Bill 2, passed by the 89th Texas Legislature and signed into law by Governor Abbott in June 2025. According to the Texas Education Agency (TEA), the allotment provides funding for five partnership types: PREP Mentorship, PREP Grow Your Own, PREP Preservice Residence, PREP Preservice Traditional, and PREP Preservice Alternative Certification. Participation is optional for eligible districts and open-enrollment charter schools, funding is provided through Foundation School Program formulas, and it is available for every school system in the state.
House Bill 2 provided a record $8.5 billion in new public education funding for Texas, including significant investments to support teachers and strengthen the educator pipeline. TEA said a complete list of participating districts is available on its PREP Allotment webpage.
