Connecticut Leads 14-State Coalition in Letter to Meta Urging Protection of Legitimate Election Activity

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong on October 26 led a coalition of 14 attorneys general in a letter urging Meta to protect legitimate election-related activity on its platforms. The letter followed the erroneous suspension of the No Kings Coalition's Instagram account during the coalition's nationwide day of action on October 17.

According to the letter, the account was suspended at approximately 1:30 p.m. ET on October 17; administrators received no response from Meta for about 90 minutes, and it took more than four hours for access to be fully restored. Meta stated that its automated AI monitoring tool had flagged a surge of traffic from a Claude AI tool reading profiles, posts and hashtags as illicit "bot" activity, triggering automated protections that took the account offline.

Tong said this is not Meta's first election cycle and that the company should be able to handle a legitimate surge in traffic tied to a widely publicized day of action. The letter asks Meta to explain in detail why the account was suspended, when the company became aware of it, what steps it took to fix the error, whether and how human reviewers were involved, whether any other legitimate election-related accounts were suspended this cycle, and how it will distinguish legitimate political activity from bot traffic going forward. The attorneys general asked Meta to respond no later than Thursday, October 29. Joining Tong were the attorneys general of California, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Vermont and Washington.
