Florida public matching funds send nearly $360,000 more this round; gubernatorial candidate Jolly's total tops $3 million

Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida — State data released by Florida election officials on Oct. 26 show the state's voter-approved public campaign matching-funds program has paid out more than $5 million to candidates for statewide office this election cycle, with the latest round distributing nearly $360,000. The program serves candidates for governor and cabinet offices, matching small donations from Florida residents to help candidates without access to big-money donors compete in competitive statewide races.

In the latest round, Democratic gubernatorial candidate David Jolly received nearly $270,000, bringing his total through the program to more than $3 million.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds received $66,000, bringing his total to nearly $1.2 million.

As of Oct. 16, Jolly's campaign account had separately raised $11.9 million and spent nearly $9.5 million; an independent committee supporting him raised a large additional sum, which is not part of the matching program.

The program matches only individual resident donations of no more than $250 each, and the funds candidates can actually deploy go well beyond the matching money alone.
