Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania — A report published on October 26 said that school-zone speed cameras on Cottman Avenue outside Northeast High School in Philadelphia are now in operation and currently in a warning period. According to the Philadelphia Parking Authority, the cameras began operating on October 5, and the warning period runs through December 4, during which speeding will draw warnings only, not tickets. After the warning period ends, speeding fines start at $100, with fines of $100 to $150 for speeding 11 mph or more over the limit, and violations will not add points to a driver's license. The city said site selection was based on road segments with high numbers of serious injuries and deaths, pedestrian crashes and speeding, making Northeast High School another school-zone camera location in Philadelphia. The city already has cameras in operation at several school zones, including John Stetson Middle School; legislation passed by the City Council in April last year authorized cameras at school zones such as Northeast High School, and the whole program is a pilot authorized by state law.
