San Diego Triathlon Challenge Takes Over La Jolla Cove on October 25, Switching to a Run-Bike Format This Year
On October 25, the San Diego Triathlon Challenge was held at La Jolla Cove, the culminating day of the Challenged Athletes Foundation's annual weekend of events. The morning began with an athlete celebration ceremony before the competition started; this year's event used a duathlon format, replacing the ocean swim with a 5-kilometer run, followed by a 30-mile bike ride and an 8-mile run on a course through the La Jolla scenic area. The day also featured several participation events, including the Nike-presented 5K walk and wheelchair event, the EōS Fitness-presented Tour de Cove ride, and the Jami Marseilles Challenged Athletes Kids Run and Wheelchair event for young athletes with physical disabilities, while the Toyota Athlete Lounge provided recovery and refueling space for participants. The weekend of events began on October 23: Friday brought adaptive open-water swim and surf clinics at La Jolla Shores and the Celebration of Sport awards in the evening, honoring three-time Paralympian Mohamed Lahna, Paralympic snowboarding gold medalist Kate Delson and the Ross family, among others. Saturday featured run and mobility clinics, an adaptive swim clinic, and tennis and pickleball open activities. Organizers said that for more than thirty years the event has held to the belief that everyone should have the opportunity to experience sport.
