GSM News

EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council Meets in Brussels from October 26: Post-2027 Common Agricultural Policy in Focus

On October 26 and 27, the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council will meet in Brussels, where agriculture ministers will seek to reach a partial negotiating position on the rules of the Common Agricultural Policy after 2027, while also discussing trade-related agricultural issues. Fisheries ministers will seek to reach a political agreement at the meeting on 2027 Baltic Sea fishing opportunities, and prepare the EU's position for the annual meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas. The Common Agricultural Policy is one of the EU's longest-standing and largest-budget policies, concerning how subsidies are paid to farmers across Europe, environmental conditions and food security; any rule adjustment affects the distribution of interests among member states, so negotiations have historically been protracted. This meeting draws attention because the post-2027 policy framework will determine the direction of EU agricultural subsidies for years to come, while European farmers currently face multiple pressures from rising costs, climate volatility and international market competition. Baltic Sea fishing quotas are equally sensitive: fish stock recovery, the livelihoods of coastal fishermen and ecological protection goals must be balanced, and ministers often concede nothing on quota figures. During the meeting, Brussels will also hear the voices of national agricultural lobby groups and environmental organizations, which hope to express their demands before the final position takes shape. For consumers, the meeting's direct impact will not immediately show up in vegetable prices, but long-term changes in agricultural subsidies and fishing rules will eventually transmit through production costs to the food supply chain.
