Call for Public Art for Sacramento's Martin Luther King Jr. Library Closes October 26: Selected Artist to Receive $151,500
The City of Sacramento is calling for public art proposals for the entrance of the renovated Martin Luther King Jr. Library in South Sacramento, and the application deadline is Monday, October 26; professional artists who wish to take part should submit their applications by that day. As introduced in the city manager's newsletter in the city's October 21 City Express bulletin, the work's theme is an exploration of civil rights, and it may take the form of a sculpture, a relief, a site-specific design, or an environmental installation; artists skilled in these forms are encouraged to apply, and the selected artist will receive $151,500 to complete the work. As an important public space in the community, the art at the library's entrance is more than decoration — it is a window conveying civil rights history and community values to the residents who pass through the library every day, and the city hopes the open call will find a work that is both artistically strong and resonant with the community the library serves. The detailed requirements, submission materials, and review process are set out in the city's call documents, and artists should carefully check the eligibility conditions and deadline before submitting to avoid missing the opportunity because of incomplete materials. For Sacramento-area artists, this is a chance to leave a work in a public building, and the size of the award is sufficient to support the production and installation of a large entrance piece; the October 26 deadline is the final action point.
