TALLADEGA — Kyle Larson staged a last-lap comeback at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday, October 25, winning the YellaWood 500 by 0.041 seconds over Hendrick Motorsports teammate William Byron for his first career superspeedway victory, stretching his NASCAR Cup Series championship lead to 73 points.
The decisive moment came on the final overtime lap. Larson was leading coming off Turn 2 when Austin Hill pulled out of line and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. broke away toward the finish, shuffling Larson out of the lead; with a push from Ross Chastain, Larson charged back down the frontstretch to beat Byron and Stenhouse to the line in a photo finish. Byron finished second and Stenhouse third. It was Larson’s third win of the season, all three coming in the postseason Chase, and the 35th Cup Series victory of his career.
In the standings, Larson leads second-place Denny Hamlin by 73 points with two races remaining, at Martinsville and Homestead-Miami; Hamlin finished eighth on Sunday. Larson told USA Network after the race: “I got really lucky with how everything worked out there.” On current points, he can clinch the championship as early as next week at Martinsville.
The race was chaotic throughout. A multi-car crash in the middle of the race collected ten cars, including championship contenders Ryan Blaney and Tyler Reddick, and a late crash that flipped Joey Logano’s car upside down brought out the red flag; Logano and Riley Herbst, also involved in the wreck, were later released from the medical center.
