SEATTLE — The Seattle Seahawks beat the previously unbeaten Kansas City Chiefs 20-3 on Sunday night at Lumen Field, handing Kansas City its first loss of the season. Wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught nine passes for 150 yards and a touchdown, quarterback Sam Darnold went 20-of-28 for 257 yards and one touchdown, and Seattle's defense held Patrick Mahomes to 165 yards on 19-of-33 passing with no touchdown passes and one interception. Seattle improved to 4-3; Kansas City fell to 5-1.
After a scoreless first quarter, Jason Myers opened the scoring with a 25-yard field goal at 8:24 of the second quarter. Mahomes, pressured by Nick Emmanwori, then overthrew a pass that safety Ty Okada intercepted, and Darnold found Smith-Njigba for a 28-yard touchdown on third-and-9 to make it 10-0. Smith-Njigba had six catches for 129 yards by halftime, while Kansas City managed only five first downs and failed on all four third-down tries. Late in the half, Darnold was intercepted in the end zone by Nohl Williams on second-and-goal from the 3, but Harrison Butker's 58-yard field goal attempt fell short — the first time this season the Chiefs were held scoreless in a half.
Seattle's first drive of the second half consumed 6:51 and ended with Myers' 35-yard field goal for 13-0. Kansas City answered with a long drive on which Derick Hall sacked Mahomes and forced a fumble that Mahomes recovered, and Butker connected from 50 yards to cut it to 13-3. In the fourth quarter, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce recorded the 1,103rd reception of his career, passing Marvin Harrison for fifth place all time, according to NBC, but Kansas City never reached the red zone: Butker missed wide right from 45 yards with 8:38 left, his second miss of the night, and Seattle answered with a nine-play, 65-yard drive capped by Emanuel Wilson's 21-yard touchdown run with 3:54 remaining, Myers' extra point making it 20-3. The Chiefs' final possession ended on downs at 3:19 when a fourth-and-10 pass gained only three yards, and Seattle ran out the clock. Wilson finished with 100 yards on 24 carries.
Running back Kenneth Walker III, who signed a three-year, $43 million deal with Kansas City in the offseason and was the MVP of Seattle's Super Bowl LX win in February, was held to 36 yards on 14 carries and 21 yards on four catches in his first game back in Seattle. Butker finished 1-of-3 on field goals. Seahawks receiver Rashid Shaheed left with a knee injury in the first half and did not return; he had two catches for one yard and a 32-yard punt return, and running back Velus Jones Jr. also exited early with a hamstring injury. Seattle outgained Kansas City 410-213, led 24-11 in first downs and converted 11 of 16 third downs to the Chiefs' 3 of 11.
