Follow-Up: U.S. Embassy in Beirut Issues Security Alert, Warning of Flight Disruptions and Possible Aerial Attacks

The U.S. Embassy in Lebanon issued a security alert on October 24 urging Americans in the Middle East to exercise heightened vigilance, warning that Iranian-supported Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, including on civilian airports, could escalate rapidly beyond the immediate area, and that Americans in Lebanon should be ready for flight cancellations, airspace closures and travel disruptions. The embassy stated plainly that the U.S. government currently has limited ability to offer emergency services to U.S. citizens in Lebanon.

According to the alert, Houthi hostilities against Saudi Arabia have caused civilian casualties and severe travel disruptions, and Iran and groups supportive of Iran may target U.S. interests overseas or locations associated with the United States and Americans around the world, including U.S. businesses and other institutions. Travelers to or from the Middle East were advised to monitor airport and airline operations, develop contingency plans in advance, and check flight status directly with their airline or through Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport.

The embassy remains open for limited routine and emergency American citizen and visa services. On October 23, the State Department updated its Travel Advisory for Lebanon: the Level 4 "Do Not Travel" level and risk indicators were unchanged, while the summary was revised to reflect the increased threat of Iranian-supported Houthi regional aggression.

The alert's actions to take include enrolling in the State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for the latest security updates; staying away from glass doors, windows and fallen debris if an aerial attack occurs; keeping a cell phone charged and pre-programmed with emergency numbers; avoiding all demonstrations, large gatherings and areas with a heavy police presence; monitoring local media and following the instructions of local authorities; and exercising caution at locations publicly associated with the United States while keeping a low profile.
