San Jose Begins Installing 33 Speed Cameras Citywide: Warnings Start December 14, Then Fines of $50 to $500 After 60 Days
SAN JOSE, California — The City of San Jose, in Santa Clara County, announced on October 23 at Scottsdale Park that installation has begun on 33 automated speed cameras across the city. Mayor Matt Mahan, joined by families of people killed by speeding drivers, said the cameras will begin issuing warnings on December 14, with a 60-day warning period before citations carrying fines of $50 to $500 begin.
The pilot stems from California's AB 645, passed in 2023, which authorizes San Jose and five other cities to test automated speed enforcement for five years. The 33 systems will be spread across every City Council district, with locations chosen from crash history, frequent speeding, and pedestrian-safety needs near schools, parks, hospitals and senior centers. Cameras trigger only at 11 mph or more over the posted limit, capture still photos of the rear license plate only, use no video and no facial recognition, and every citation is reviewed by a Department of Transportation employee before it is mailed.
City figures show 41 traffic deaths in San Jose so far this year, after a modern record of 65 deaths in 2022; speeding was a contributing factor in 33 percent of traffic fatalities from 2018 to 2022. The program is part of the city's Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic deaths, and officials cited San Francisco, where dangerous speeding at camera locations fell 84 percent over the first 18 months of enforcement.
