New Mexico Governor Announces October 26 Visit to San Juan County Flood Zone; State Emergency Order in Effect as Resources Deployed
New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham will travel to the flood disaster zone in San Juan County on October 26. The governor's office announced the trip in a statement on October 25, after historic flooding struck along the San Juan and Animas rivers. The statement said a state emergency order is in effect and resources are now in place.
On October 24, the state government said state emergency rescue teams were working alongside San Juan County officials to rescue residents and assist evacuations, with the National Guard and state police taking part. Navajo Nation police said on October 24 that rescue crews carried out 20 rescues overnight, concentrated between Farmington and Shiprock; power had been restored to most of southern Shiprock by October 24, though some homes and businesses remained without electricity.
The Navajo Tribal Utility Authority said on October 25 that flooding had hit Shiprock's wastewater treatment plant, and that untreated sewage was being discharged into the San Juan River to prevent it from backing up into homes and businesses. The authority also said the drinking water system operates independently and was unaffected by the flooding, so drinking water remains safe, and it urged Shiprock sewer customers to conserve water and stay away from the San Juan River and floodwaters. The governor's visit will focus on rescue and recovery progress on the ground, and the state government said it will continue coordinating relief and repair work with the county and tribal authorities.
