New Hampshire Lawmaker Sweeney Speaks Out on October 25: Firmly Against New Taxes, Urges Voters to Back Property Tax Cap on November 3
On October 25, New Hampshire political figure Joe Sweeney posted a series of messages on social media restating his opposition to new state taxes and urging voters to support a property tax cap at the polls on November 3.
In the posts, Sweeney recalled that he had already made his position clear in a May 14 speech in the state House of Representatives: some people want to open the door and reach into voters' wallets, but New Hampshire has shut that door — the state has no income tax, and "there won't be one on my watch." He went on to say that New Hampshire has neither an income tax nor a sales tax, that the next step is to cap property taxes, that the measure is on the ballot on Tuesday, November 3, and he urged voters to "flip the ballot over and vote yes," and to bring their neighbors along to vote.
New Hampshire has long been known for having no broad-based income tax or sales tax, and local government finance depends heavily on property taxes, making property tax caps and proposed new taxes a central issue in recent election cycles.
