Michigan Falls 83-66 to Houston in Exhibition as 9-for-33 Three-Point Shooting Exposes Offensive Woes
On October 25, the Michigan men's basketball team lost its final exhibition game, the "Battleground 2K26" at Van Andel Arena, 83-66 to the University of Houston. The game was played in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan. Michigan's shot selection was badly skewed in the first half — 20 three-point attempts against only 7 two-point attempts — and the Wolverines made just 5 of those first-half threes, finishing 9-for-33 from beyond the arc for 27.3 percent.
The shot mix balanced out in the second half, with 10 two-point and 13 three-point attempts, but Michigan never found a rhythm of consecutive baskets until, with 15:47 left in the half, Roddy Gayle hit a three and J.P. Estrella followed with a dunk for the team's first back-to-back field goals of the game. Michigan also lost the fast-break battle 9-15, with interior playmaking and transition offense below last season's standard. Trey McKenney and Quinn Costello each shot 2-for-7; the four reserves other than Oscar Goodman combined to go 0-for-7, while Goodman shot 2-for-4 and Gayle 2-for-5.
The coaching staff had said the team would attempt even more threes this season, but this game exposed a problem not of volume but of accuracy and shot quality. The exhibition loss is a warning ahead of the regular season: when the threes are not falling, Michigan will need more reliable interior scoring and transition offense as a fallback.
