Pacific Storm to Sweep Eastern Idaho Overnight; Snake River Plain Gusts Could Reach 40 mph
Eastern Idaho saw a weather turning point in the forecast on October 25: a fast-moving Pacific storm is set to cross the region on the night of the 26th, bringing gusts and rain and ending the recent dry, foggy pattern.
Fog is expected in places on the night of the 25th with poor visibility and overnight lows around 33 degrees Fahrenheit. Fog lifts on the morning of the 26th and temperatures recover, with daytime highs near 60. By the night of the 26th, the chance of rain reaches 80%, with most of it falling before midnight — less than 0.10 inch at lower elevations and 0.20 to 0.30 inch of liquid precipitation in the mountains.
Wind is the storm's most notable feature: gusts on the Snake River Plain could reach 30 to 40 mph, and drivers crossing open ground and elevated roadways should watch for crosswinds. In the mountains, the snow line drops to about 6,500 feet late on the 26th, with 1 to 3 inches of snow possible at passes and higher elevations, and high ground along Interstate 15 and the Wyoming border has a better-than-65% chance of at least 0.25 inch of liquid precipitation. With warm valley temperatures, any rain-snow mix at lower elevations will not accumulate. Showers will linger in the high country through midweek. Residents should secure outdoor items and check the latest forecast before traveling at night.
