Wyoming's South Pass Burn Scar Comes Back to Life as Crews Replant Sagebrush Seedlings
An August 2026 wildfire burned about 25 square miles of sagebrush near South Pass, Wyoming — one of the state's largest burn scars of 2026 — but the land is already coming back, according to reporting published October 25. Game and Fish biologist Amy Anderson noted that after autumn rains, native wheatgrass, prairie smoke, and western yarrow sprouted in October, with regrowth on the west side dominated by native species. The fire also burned three sage-grouse leks.
Crews from the state Game and Fish Department, the State Forestry Division's newly formed Gannett Peak wildland fire crew, and the Shoshone National Forest planted seedlings on the hardest-hit plots, putting in about 2,000 plants in a day. BLM biologist Emma Freeland secured a donation of 7,000 surplus seedlings from the Wyoming Honor Farm. Anderson also helped submit a $2 million grant application to combat invasive cheatgrass in the burn area.
