Seattle Chinese Community Lecture on October 25: Archaeology Revisits the 1885 Rock Springs Massacre of Chinese Miners
From noon to 2 p.m. on October 25, the Seattle chapter of the Chinese American Citizens Alliance held a lecture at the Stroum Jewish Community Center on Mercer Island on the archaeology of Rock Springs Chinatown and the 1885 Chinese massacre. In 1885, anti-Chinese violence erupted in Rock Springs, Wyoming Territory, killing at least 28 Chinese miners and destroying the town's Chinatown, in one of the deadliest acts of anti-Chinese violence in U.S. history. More than a century later, archaeological work is bringing this nearly forgotten history back into public view. The speaker, Dr. Laura Ng, a historical archaeologist and assistant professor of anthropology at Grinnell College, drew on excavated artifacts, historical records and community stories to describe the everyday lives and experiences of Chinese immigrants in the Rock Springs and Evanston Chinatowns, and introduced recent commemoration efforts, including a congressional resolution introduced by Representative Judy Chu recognizing the massacre. The lecture was free with advance registration, and organizers welcomed anyone interested in Chinese American history, immigration history or social justice. For Chinese families in Seattle, it was also a chance to introduce children to the history of early Chinese pioneers.
