San Francisco Bay Area Whale Watch Benefit on October 25: Out on Monterey Bay With a Marine Biologist
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on October 25, the San Francisco Bay Chapter of the American Cetacean Society held a benefit whale watch, taking participants out on Monterey Bay to get close to humpback whales, dolphins and other marine mammals. Marine biologist Nancy Black accompanied the four-hour trip, during which participants observed cetaceans while learning about marine ecology and conservation. The outing was also a fundraiser, with ticket contributions earmarked for the chapter's upcoming 2026 research grants. The chapter said it awarded grants to three marine biologists over the past year to study cetacean behavior and habitat dependence, work it says is increasingly important for advocacy and policy as warming seas shift prey patterns and affect ocean ecosystems. The chapter also hosts monthly talks and a popular annual online nature class. For Bay Area residents, the whale watch was both a weekend trip close to the ocean and a direct way to support marine research.
