Thune on Permitting Reform Bill: State Transmission Siting Authority Should Not Go to Washington
On October 25, South Dakota Public Broadcasting reported that U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune weighed in on Congress's permitting reform bill, saying reform is needed but some provisions have raised concerns at the state level. The bill, titled the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act, is scheduled for a Senate hearing after the midterm elections and aims to speed federal approvals for energy and other projects. Chris Nelson, chairman of the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission, worries the bill hands final authority over transmission line siting to the federal government, weakening the voice of elected state bodies. Thune said the bill contains many good reforms, but its fate may hinge on the election results.
