Jokić Tells Booing Home Fans "You Don't Have to Come Anymore" as Nuggets Rally Past Pelicans in Overtime for First Win of the Season
Postgame coverage on October 25 showed Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokić publicly responding to boos from the home crowd after the team's 141-135 overtime comeback win over the New Orleans Pelicans in its home opener. The Nuggets trailed by as many as 23 points before outscoring New Orleans 37-18 in the fourth quarter to tie the game, with Jamal Murray hitting a free throw with 17 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Jokić posted 8 points, 7 rebounds and 1 block in the extra period, and rookie Trevon Brazile added a key block at the start of overtime and 7 points as Denver secured its first win of the season.
"I think the fans who booed us don't have to come anymore," Jokić said after the game. "If you follow us, you know we never give up, and we've come back from worse or similar situations." He added that real Nuggets fans should support the team rather than boo when it falls behind.
It was Denver's first home game of the season, and the Nuggets trailed for most of the night, still down 19 after three quarters. Jokić also said the team's slow start was just "bad energy" that took a few minutes to shake off. His remarks became the focus of Denver sports coverage on October 25 and sparked discussion among fans about the home-court atmosphere.
