Ghana High School to Reopen in Phases After August Unrest: Final-Year Students Return Oct. 25, Second-Years Nov. 16
Obuasi Senior High Technical School in Ghana's Ashanti Region will reopen in phases after a closure of nearly three months. According to Ghanaian media reports on October 24 citing an official Ghana Education Service (GES) announcement, third-year students are to report back on Sunday, October 25, and second-year students on Monday, November 16. First-year students reported on September 18 and have remained in school since.
The school has been closed to second- and third-year students since August 5, when unrest broke out on campus. Students said they had found what they believed to be a buried baby on the grounds; police exhumed remains and arrested six students. Some students confronted and assaulted headmaster Zakaria Abdulai, who was treated at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, and school buildings and vehicles were vandalized.
Abdulai also faces allegations of sexual misconduct: students have accused him of impregnating a female student, terminating the pregnancy and burying the fetus. The GES has interdicted him pending investigation. Police arrested him, recorded his statement and granted him self-recognisance bail, and the case docket has been forwarded to the Office of the Attorney-General for legal advice. The allegations have not been tried in court, and Abdulai has not been convicted.
Daniel Fenyi, head of public relations at the GES, said in a statement on October 22 that preparations for the reopening were at an advanced stage and that further administrative guidelines would be communicated to parents and guardians. Final-year students at the school are preparing for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), and the nearly three-month closure had caused widespread anxiety among parents.
