Wyoming Gubernatorial Candidate Bextel Says in Oct. 24 Interview: Some Taxpayer-Funded Affordable Housing Is Owned by Japanese Companies
On Oct. 24, an interview with Rebecca Bextel, the Constitution Party candidate for governor of Wyoming, conducted by Tucker Carlson, was published, in which she alleged that Wyoming taxpayers' money is flowing to affordable housing projects owned by out-of-state private equity firms, including Japanese companies.
According to the Daily Caller, Bextel said the town of Jackson gave land to developers under a "free 99-year lease" to build affordable housing, which could endanger the Jackson Hole rodeo grounds, which have a history of more than 120 years. She also said the project involved a total investment of $24 million, of which $4 million was unaccounted for, and that after spending $1,250 of her own money on public records requests she traced $1 million and found the developer had paid that money to itself.
Bextel further said that of four buildings she identified in Natrona County, where Casper is located, two are owned by the Japanese private equity firm ORIX and the other two by an East Coast equity firm, and that the projects pay no property taxes, while the loans are backed by the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program. She said she is suing the town of Jackson over the matter, and said that if she loses the election, Wyoming will become like Colorado within four years. All of the above are statements made by the candidate herself in the interview, and the related allegations have not been independently verified.
