Follow-Up: South Carolina Last-Second 48-Yard Field Goal Beats Tennessee 27-24 as Volunteers Surrender Lead in Final Two Minutes
On October 24, the University of Tennessee football team lost 27-24 on the road to the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina, suffering a last-minute comeback defeat. This site's second round had reported the first half of this game; the new development is the final result: South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers tied the game at 24-24 with a 4-yard rushing touchdown with 1:17 remaining, after which Tennessee quarterback George MacIntyre was sacked by Dylan Stewart and fumbled, South Carolina recovered the ball at Tennessee's 34-yard line with 33 seconds left, and South Carolina kicker Malik Orsan hit a 48-yard field goal as time expired to seal the win. Tennessee had rallied after falling behind 14-0 early and still led 24-17 with less than two minutes remaining, but could not hold on. MacIntyre completed 16 of 23 passes for 136 yards; running back DeSean Bishop carried 32 times for 120 yards and a touchdown. For South Carolina, Sellers threw for 210 yards and a touchdown and also rushed for 96 yards. After the game, South Carolina fans rushed the field in celebration; under Southeastern Conference rules, the school will be fined $500,000 for that, and the money will be paid to the visiting University of Tennessee. Tennessee's record moved to 6-2; the team now enters a bye week and will host the University of Kentucky at home on November 7.
