Trump Exempts Some Canadian Goods From Tariffs; Collins Says Maine Farmers Will Benefit
The Associated Press reported on October 23 that U.S. President Donald Trump had decided to exempt some Canadian imports from his 50% tariffs, with the change to take effect on October 30, just four days before Election Day on November 3. The exempted goods include plywood, packaging crates and some machinery, which had been among the $20 billion in Canadian products hit with tariffs this summer. The same package of changes also imposes 50% tariffs on other Canadian goods, including carpets, some valves and waste products.
Maine Republican Senator Susan Collins said in a statement that she had spoken repeatedly with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, stressing the burden the tariffs placed on Maine families, businesses, farmers and growers. Collins said many Maine farmers and growers rely on specialized equipment and packaging materials from Canada that either cannot be obtained from U.S. suppliers or would be extremely costly to replace.
Collins is seeking re-election against Democrat Troy Jackson, in a race that remains closely contested. The White House said the move was intended to reduce the burden on American businesses while better serving the public interest.
