Worcester 'Wall of Women' Unveiled Oct. 24, Honoring 40 Women Pioneers Downtown
On October 24, a new 120-foot mural, the "Worcester Wall of Women," was unveiled at the corner of Franklin Street and Francis J. McGrath Boulevard in Worcester, Massachusetts, honoring 40 women who have made a positive impact on the city, both living and deceased. Painted on the exterior wall of the YWCA of Central Massachusetts, it replaces a 10-year-old mural of a mother, a young girl and an older woman.
Lead artist Sharinna Traverso and collaborating artist Janessa Burks spent about three months this summer on the work, using roughly 40 gallons of paint. A large QR code at one end lets passersby scan to read biographies of each woman pictured, compiled with help from Clark University students.
Among those honored is Hazel Berry, 74, Worcester's first Black female police detective, who served from 1980 to 2016 — 36 years. Deborah Hall, CEO of the YWCA of Central Massachusetts, said the wall is meant both to keep these women's contributions remembered and to inspire young girls to believe they can make a positive impact too.
