Justice Department Notifies Oregon It Will Send Federal Observers to Multnomah County on Nov. 3: Secretary of State Notes Their Powers Are Limited
On Oct. 23, the Oregon Capital Chronicle reported that the U.S. Department of Justice notified Oregon officials on Oct. 22 that it will send federal election observers to Multnomah County for the Nov. 3 midterm Election Day, and the Oregon Secretary of State promptly noted for voters that the observers' powers are limited. The report said federal observers have been sent to Oregon before, but the type of observers in this deployment, President Trump's recent attempts to assert federal power over state elections, and his continued denial of the 2020 election results have heightened state leaders' concerns. Oregon is one of at least 10 states notified by the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, along with Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Maine, Minnesota, Michigan, Texas, Utah and Washington. Civil Rights Division head Harmeet Dhillon told Fox News last month that the division plans to send 1,000 observers nationwide, calling it the largest monitoring operation in the division's history; Dhillon has repeatedly denied the 2020 election results. The report also noted that the Trump administration is for the first time sending criminal prosecutors as observers. As of the morning of Oct. 23, a Justice Department spokesperson had not responded to the Capital Chronicle's questions about how many observers will be sent to Multnomah County or why the county was chosen.
