Brooklyn's Eighth Avenue Gets 'Brooklyn Chinatown' Signs: Hundreds Witness Street Co-Naming

On Oct. 23, Brooklyn's Chinese community held a street co-naming ceremony on Eighth Avenue, adding "Brooklyn Chinatown" signs at four corners around 60th Street and Eighth Avenue, honoring Brooklyn's Chinatown and the Chinese community's more than 40 years of contributions to Brooklyn and New York City; hundreds of community residents and elected officials attended. The naming was championed by New York City Council Member Susan Zhuang, and is intended to affirm, in the form of a street name, the history of the Chinese community taking root, starting businesses and serving the neighborhood locally, giving Chinatown's identity a clearer presence in public space. The Eighth Avenue Chinatown is one of the largest Chinese enclaves in New York City, lined with restaurants, supermarkets, pharmacies and small businesses, and is the first stop where many Chinese newcomers settle and build their lives. Community members said at the ceremony that the sign is not only thanks for more than 40 years of Chinese contributions, but also a hope that younger generations growing up locally will see their cultural background formally recognized by the city. The existing street names remain unchanged; "Brooklyn Chinatown" is added as a co-name on the signs.
