Commanders GM Explains Hiring Former Head Coach Wilks: Discussed Since Training Camp to Strengthen the Secondary
On October 23, Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters used his weekly radio show (106.7 The Fan) to explain in detail the team's decision this week to hire former NFL head coach and defensive coordinator Steve Wilks as a part-time consultant. Peters stressed that the hire had nothing to do with the team's record this season and had been discussed since training camp. Defensive coordinator Daronte Jones, after taking over the whole defense, wanted another experienced set of eyes for the secondary, Peters said, and Peters knows Wilks well from their time together in San Francisco. “I know Steve; we worked together in San Francisco, and so he's an awesome person, a good man,” Peters said. He rejected speculation that management was unhappy and bringing in help midseason, saying the talks began in camp and only the process took time. Wilks, a former NFL head coach and defensive coordinator, is expected to give the young secondary an additional tactical perspective, and the explanation eased some fans' concerns about divisions inside the coaching staff.
