San Francisco Caltrain Railyards Redevelopment Enters Environmental Review: Up to 5,834 Homes and a New Station Hall
On October 24, the City of San Francisco, in San Francisco County, California, began environmental review of the redevelopment plan for the Caltrain railyards at Fourth and King Streets, after a Notice of Preparation was filed on September 30, moving the roughly 18.63-acre site into a lengthy environmental and land-use review process. Under a housing-oriented scenario, the project could include up to 5,834 homes and about 1.59 million square feet of commercial space; a second scenario would include about 1,765 homes and roughly 5.64 million square feet of commercial development. Both scenarios include a new Caltrain station hall and public open space. Developer Prologis is working with Caltrain and city officials to turn a still-operating rail facility into a transit-oriented neighborhood linking Mission Bay with the area south of Market Street. The city stressed that filing the notice does not approve construction; it only starts the review, with multiple rounds of public comment and approvals ahead. If built, the project would be one of the largest additions of housing at the southern edge of downtown San Francisco and a bellwether for easing the city's housing shortage.
