Lions Activate Branch and Mays on October 24; Both Set for Season Debuts Sunday Against the Packers
On October 24, the Detroit Lions, in Wayne County, Michigan, announced the activation of safety Brian Branch and center Cade Mays, and both are set to make their season debuts on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. Branch has not played since tearing his Achilles in a win over the Dallas Cowboys on December 4 last year, an absence of nearly eleven months, and he began this season on the injured list. Mays fractured his right wrist in training camp and has also been out until now. Both returned to practice on October 7; head coach Dan Campbell said on the 23rd that Branch is ready and the team will use him smartly, while Mays will step straight back in as the starting center. The backup center who filled in has been steady, but the Lions clearly want their offensive line whole again. On defense, Detroit has already started four different safeties this season, and Branch's return should stabilize the secondary. Coming off their bye week, the Lions face their first divisional game of the season, and the two starters' return comes at just the right time.
