Former Border Patrol Chief Tells BBC That Pulling Agents Out of Minneapolis Was a "Surrender"
On October 24, the BBC aired an interview with former U.S. Border Patrol chief Greg Bovino. Bovino, the public face of this year's large-scale immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis, Minnesota, defended the operation in the interview and called the Trump administration's subsequent withdrawal of agents from Minneapolis a "surrender." Bovino, 56, was removed shortly after two U.S. citizens were shot dead during enforcement actions in Minneapolis in January, including Renee Good, killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer on January 7. Good's family filed two civil suits against the Trump administration earlier this month alleging wrongful death and violations of protesters' civil rights, naming Bovino and the shooting officer as defendants; Bovino said in the interview that he would not respond to the suit and praised the personnel who took part in the operation. The White House has previously called the suits "baseless." The Minneapolis operation and the withdrawal decision remain a focus of political and legal dispute in the city.
