Follow-up: Kings Drop Home Opener 128-120 to Trail Blazers Despite Rookie Acuff's Career-High 33
On Friday night, October 23, the Sacramento Kings of Sacramento, Sacramento County, California, lost their season's home opener at Golden 1 Center, 128-120 to the Portland Trail Blazers; the result was reported on October 24. This site had previewed the opener; the new developments are the game itself and the rookie's performance. Portland opened the third quarter with a 15-0 run, turning a five-point deficit into a 74-64 lead, and held on for a second straight win to start the season. Nineteen-year-old rookie guard Darius Acuff Jr. scored 33 points in just his second career game, a career high, though his 10-of-26 shooting left room to grow; Domantas Sabonis posted 27 points, 19 rebounds and 10 assists for the 69th triple-double of his career; Zach LaVine scored 22. For Portland, Deni Avdija led with 26 points, Damian Lillard and Toumani Camara each scored 19, and the Blazers' 44-point third quarter with only one turnover turned the game. After an opening road loss to the Clippers, the Kings are 0-2, but Acuff's back-to-back strong starts have made him the team's biggest early storyline.
