New Hampshire: Governor Unveils Community College Affordability Plan: Promise Program Would Cover Remaining Tuition for Families Earning Up to $100,000
In New Hampshire, Governor Kelly Ayotte announced a plan on October 22 to make community college more affordable. Under the proposal, eligible New Hampshire residents admitted to one of the state's seven community colleges would first use all eligible state and federal grant funding, with a new Promise Program covering the remaining tuition balance.
To qualify, a student's total family income must be up to $100,000, with typical assets. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and meet federal financial aid eligibility requirements, enroll in at least six credits per semester as a matriculated student, and maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA while meeting federal satisfactory academic progress standards.
New Hampshire's community college system operates seven colleges statewide offering degree and certificate programs in fields including health care, manufacturing and the skilled trades. Funding and implementation details for the Promise Program still require action by the state Legislature, and the Governor's Office did not release an estimate of first-year participants.
