Korean Artist DAWN Releases First Ambient Album 'Green House' on October 23, Built From Field Recordings in Three Korean Forests
Korean artist DAWN released his first ambient album, 'green house,' through online music platforms at 1 p.m. Korean time on October 23. It is his first musical work presented as executive producer of Kachi Eum, a project that sheds light on Korean artisans and national heritage. The album was made through field recording, a method that captures sounds outside the studio and uses natural sounds and everyday noise as musical material.
DAWN visited three locations for the record: Gwangneung Forest, preserved for more than 500 years; the forest surrounding Namhansanseong; and Bijarim, a forest dense with nutmeg trees that are hundreds of years old. Sounds recorded at the three sites form the album's five tracks, including 'Ancient Future' and 'Patience & Devotion.' Berlin-based mastering engineer Zino Mikorey also took part in the album.
Ambient music focuses on the texture, sense of space and atmosphere of sound rather than strong melodies or rhythms. According to an official involved with the release, ambient music was the genre that let DAWN set down complicated thoughts and rest when he first began meditating, and the album is his attempt to bring that sense of rest to life in music. Starting with 'green house,' DAWN plans to continue traveling around Korea to record the beauty of nature through sound.
