New York U.S. Attorneys Announce Election Complaint Lines Ahead of Early Voting and November 3 Election
The U.S. Attorney's Offices for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York announced that Assistant U.S. Attorneys will lead their offices' efforts under the Justice Department's nationwide Election Day Program for the November 3, 2026 general election, including New York's early voting period, which runs from October 24 through November 1, 2026.
U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella of the Eastern District and U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald of the Southern District announced that AUSAs Erik Paulsen and Andrew Grubin have been appointed District Election Officers for the Eastern District, and AUSA David J. Kennedy for the Southern District. In that role, they oversee their districts' handling of Election Day complaints involving voting rights concerns, threats of violence to election officials or staff, and election fraud, in consultation with Justice Department headquarters in Washington.
"When citizens of the Eastern District of New York exercise the fundamental constitutional right to vote, the process must be legally safeguarded," Nocella said. "Anyone seeking to corrupt the process will be brought to justice." McDonald said: "Democracy depends upon elections that are free, fair, and accessible. The Southern District of New York is proud to continue its longstanding practice of maintaining an opportunity for voters to promptly report any issues that they may face at the polls."
Federal law protects against crimes including threatening violence against election officials or staff, intimidating or bribing voters, buying and selling votes, impersonating voters, altering vote tallies, stuffing ballot boxes, and marking ballots for voters against their wishes or without their input. The Voting Rights Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act protect the right of voters to mark their own ballot or to be assisted by a person of their choice where voters need assistance because of disability or limited English proficiency.
Complaints during the voting period ending November 3 can be made at (646) 369-4739 for Manhattan, the Bronx, and Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, and Westchester counties, and at (718) 208-1182 for Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Nassau and Suffolk counties. Complaints about possible violations of federal voting rights laws can also be made to the Civil Rights Division in Washington, D.C., at 800-253-3931. The FBI's New York Field Office can be reached at (212) 384-1000. In the case of a crime of violence or intimidation, the offices advise calling 911 immediately, as state and local police have primary jurisdiction over polling places.
