Dyersburg Man Sentenced to 31 Years for Drug Trafficking While on Supervised Release for the Same Crime
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Tennessee announced on October 23 that Vinson Brent Taylor, 46, of Dyersburg, Tennessee, has been sentenced to a total of 31 years in federal prison for drug trafficking offenses. U.S. Attorney D. Michael Dunavant announced the sentence.
According to evidence presented in court, in August 2024 a Dyersburg Police Department officer on patrol witnessed two men fighting in front of a residence; both fled when the officer arrived. The officer found a rental vehicle left running with its driver-side door wide open. The vehicle contained a large quantity of crack cocaine and over 250 fentanyl pills, as well as marijuana, ecstasy, and a substance later identified as methamphetamine. Near the center console were Taylor's cellphone and a car rental agreement in his name, and forensic analysis by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation determined that a distinctive embroidered hat found near the vehicle contained Taylor's DNA.
Taylor's criminal history includes at least three convictions for selling cocaine, three for evading law enforcement, six for possessing and trafficking marijuana, one for retaliating against a law enforcement officer, two for assaults, and over 46 prior arrests. On May 5, 2026, a federal jury found him guilty on two counts of trafficking crack cocaine and fentanyl. At an October 20, 2026 sentencing hearing, U.S. District Judge S. Thomas Anderson noted the serious nature of the crime and Taylor's extensive criminal history and sentenced him to 30 years in prison.
Taylor had previously served a 151-month federal sentence for trafficking crack cocaine and was on federal supervised release when he committed this crime. The government presented additional evidence that while on supervised release he possessed over 800 grams of marijuana in April 2024 and evaded police in October 2024, resulting in an additional year of imprisonment, for a total of 31 years. There is no parole in the federal system.
'Taylor is a hard-headed recidivist drug dealer who was brazenly distributing deadly fentanyl into our rural communities while on supervised release for the same conduct. He clearly did not learn his lesson from his prior 12-and-a-half-year prison sentence, so he will now be removed from West Tennessee until he is 77 years old,' U.S. Attorney Dunavant said. TBI Director David Rausch said his agency and its law enforcement partners will continue to vigorously pursue those who fuel the deadly epidemic by illegally distributing these substances.
The case was investigated by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the Dyersburg Police Department, the United States Secret Service, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Immanuel Chioco and Adam Davis prosecuted the case.
