Two Former FBI Officials Charged With Lying to Congress Over Hunter Biden Laptop Inquiry
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro announced on October 23 that two former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) officials have been charged with lying to Congress over their roles in investigations into Hunter Biden's laptop during the 2020 election. Nikki Floris, 46, and Bradley Benavides, 56, were each charged in a criminal complaint with one count of lying to Congress.
Pirro said the pair had been senior officials on the FBI's Foreign Influence Task Force and were questioned about their involvement in the agency's investigations into Hunter Biden, the son of former President Joe Biden. She said one of the former officials claimed to have learned about the investigation from Wikipedia, but evidence showed their involvement in helping shape the public narrative surrounding Hunter Biden's laptop shortly before the election.
According to the Associated Press, Floris was among the FBI officials who briefed Congress on 2020 foreign election interference, and her lawyers say she has been charged by the Justice Department.
Congressional records show that on August 6, 2020, Floris and Benavides briefed Senators Chuck Grassley and Ron Johnson on behalf of the FBI and the intelligence community while the senators were investigating the Biden family's foreign business dealings. In an August 25, 2022 letter, Grassley and Johnson said the briefing had been unnecessary and was leaked in a manner that falsely portrayed their investigation as advancing Russian disinformation. Floris was then the Intelligence Analyst in Charge of the FBI Washington Field Office's Intelligence Division, and Benavides was a Deputy Assistant Director of the FBI's Counterintelligence Division.
CNN noted the charges come less than two weeks before the November 3 midterm Election Day. Hunter Biden was convicted of federal tax and gun charges and was pardoned by his father around Thanksgiving in 2024. IRS whistleblowers had claimed the FBI slow-walked an investigation into Hunter Biden, while Special Counsel David Weiss investigated the Republican allegations and did not recommend any additional charges beyond the gun and tax charges; a government informant was charged by Weiss for providing false information alleging bribery in the Biden family.
Court dates and plea arrangements for the two defendants had not been announced as of publication. The charges in a criminal complaint are allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
