Pennsylvania Invests Over $4.1 Million to Expand Schools-to-Work Program Across 17 Projects
HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania — The Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry (L&I) announced on October 23 an investment of more than $4.1 million in Schools-to-Work grant awards, supporting 17 projects statewide that will prepare high school students for a career and ensure they have a clear path to employment upon graduation. The projects align training with in-demand industries including the skilled trades, health care, manufacturing, information technology and education, and strengthen partnerships among school districts, career and technical centers, employers, workforce boards and training providers.
L&I Secretary Nancy A. Walker announced the investment during an event at Susquehanna Township School District, which was awarded $236,226 to launch its PATH-Ed registered pre-apprenticeship program, building on its Cadet Teaching Program to address teacher shortages. Other recipients include the Farrell Area School District, the University of Pittsburgh–Titusville, and JEVS Human Services and Launchpad in Philadelphia, with awards between about $210,000 and $250,000.
Over the past three years, Governor Josh Shapiro's administration has increased funding for vo-tech, career and technical education and apprenticeship programs from $118 million to $183 million, registered 231 new pre-apprenticeships and apprenticeships, and enrolled nearly 18,000 new apprentices. This round is 100 percent state funded; the governor's 2026-27 budget plan proposes an additional $18 million and doubling Schools-to-Work funding to $7 million.
