Rogers Courts Small Business Leaders in Traverse City, Distancing Himself From Trump on Tariffs and Iran
TRAVERSE CITY, Michigan — Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers made his case to small business leaders in Traverse City on October 23, speaking at a campaign event hosted by the Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance as the high-profile race for Michigan's open Senate seat entered its final sprint to the November 3 election. The visit came two days after his second debate with Democratic opponent Abdul El-Sayed, who attended a similar Chamber Alliance event in September.
Rogers has broken with President Donald Trump on some issues: he has spoken out against Trump's tariffs on Canada and called for an end to the Iran war. Asked by reporters, he did not rule out supporting a war powers resolution and said he believes the Iran war will be wrapped up before he takes his oath of office in January. Polls show a dead heat; a Marist poll puts El-Sayed up by two points, with 2 percent of voters still undecided.
Rogers also reiterated his education focus, noting Michigan ranks 44th in the nation for fourth-grade reading scores and pledging to restore shop classes in high schools. He noted Trump will campaign in Port Huron on Sunday, but said he is talking to every segment of voters.
