Lincoln, Nebraska Unveils Winter Snow Plan on October 22: 75 Plow Trucks and 6,000 Tons of Salt Ready
The City of Lincoln, Nebraska's capital, announced on October 22 that its personnel, supplies and equipment are in place for the coming winter snow and ice season. Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird and Liz Elliott, director of Lincoln Transportation and Utilities (LTU), said the city is committed to efficient winter operations that clear roads quickly and keep the traveling public safe.
According to the city, Lincoln plans to add eight equipment operators for snow work this season, and LTU will deploy new software: sensors mounted on six snowplows analyze road surface conditions and automatically calibrate the mix of brine and granular salt being spread. The mayor said the innovation helps use city resources more efficiently and reduces environmental impact, with public safety the top goal. The city has 75 snow trucks and can call on up to 100 contractor plows depending on storm strength, serving arterials and residential streets; it has 6,000 tons of road salt in stock and its brine storage filled. During winter storms, LTU maintains nearly 3,000 lane miles of arterial and residential streets, while the Parks and Recreation Department handles the city's 150 miles of paved trails, beginning clearing when snow reaches 2 inches.
Elliott said the added staffing lets LTU expand operations across the city faster and rotate drivers during long, continuous operations in major storms.
