Missouri's 21st Circuit Judicial Commission Opens Applications for St. Louis County Circuit Judge Vacancy
Missouri's 21st Circuit Judicial Commission announced on October 22 that it has begun accepting applications for a circuit judge position in St. Louis County. The vacancy arises from the retirement of Judge Christine Allen Kerr.
According to Missouri Lawyers Media's October 22 report, the commission is now taking applications from interested candidates, and the appointee will succeed Kerr on the 21st Circuit Court — the St. Louis County Circuit Court. Some Missouri circuit judges are not elected directly by voters but chosen under the state's long-standing merit selection system: a judicial commission accepts applications, screens candidates and sends a list of nominees to the governor, who appoints from the list; the judge must later stand in a retention vote in a subsequent election. The system is designed to reduce partisan influence on judicial appointments while preserving voters' final say.
St. Louis County is among Missouri's most populous counties, and its circuit court handles large volumes of civil, criminal and family cases, so the speed of filling the vacancy directly affects scheduling and case processing. The commission's announcement sets out the application arrangements, and interested applicants can contact the commission for details on qualifications, required materials and deadlines. Following Judge Kerr's retirement, the 21st Circuit's work will be shared among the remaining judges until a successor is named.
