Chicago Mayoral Race: Five File Petitions on Day One; Johnson Files Friday, Skips Lottery
The nominating-petition filing period for Chicago's 2027 mayoral election opened this week in Cook County, Illinois. Candidates must submit at least 12,500 valid signatures to appear on the ballot; the deadline is October 26, and 16 candidates have declared.
On the first filing day, Monday, October 19, Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias filed 60,000 signatures, U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley 42,000, lobbyist John Kelly 37,000, Chicago Housing Authority Commissioner Matt Brewer 32,000 and businessman Willie Wilson 30,000 — entering the five of them in the lottery for the first position on the ballot.
Incumbent Mayor Brandon Johnson skipped the first day and filed on Friday, October 23, at noon, giving up the lottery for the first or last ballot spots. Asked why, he said: "What do I need a lottery for? I'm the mayor of the city of Chicago." Comptroller Susana Mendoza and attorney William Quinlan said they will file by Monday's deadline. A NORC poll reported by the Chicago Tribune found likely voters expressing enthusiasm for Giannoulias, Mendoza and Johnson at 59, 46 and 32 percent respectively. The mayoral election will be held in February 2027.
