Former Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns Lectures at University of Minnesota on the U.S.–China Rivalry for Global Power

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota — The University of Minnesota China Center's annual Bob and Kim Griffin Building U.S.–China Bridges Lecture, in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, was held on Thursday, October 22 at 5 p.m. at the Best Buy Theater at Northrop on the Minneapolis campus. The speaker was Nicholas Burns, U.S. ambassador to China from 2021 to 2025, lecturing on 'The U.S.–China Rivalry for Global Power.' According to the China Center's introduction, Burns argued that China will remain the United States' primary competitor for global military, economic and technological power well into the next decade; offering a nonpartisan view of the stakes in the two countries' contest, he focused on the opportunities and challenges facing business leaders in investing in, manufacturing in and trading with China, touching on artificial intelligence, biotechnology, trade and military power in the Indo-Pacific. Burns is now a professor of the practice of diplomacy and international relations at Harvard Kennedy School and an affiliated scholar at Harvard's Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies; over more than three decades in U.S. government service he served as State Department spokesman, ambassador to Greece, ambassador to NATO and undersecretary of state for political affairs. The lecture was free and open to the public; registration had closed before the event and a waitlist was open.
