Sweden's Central Bank Revives E-Krona Discussion as Cash Use Falls to 5%
STOCKHOLM — Sweden's central bank has revived discussion of an electronic krona (e-krona), Reuters reported on October 22. Deputy Governor Per Jansson said in an interview that Sweden should prepare for a possible e-krona; the Riksbank wrote to parliament's finance committee this month raising the issue.
Jansson cited two reasons: the EU's advancing digital euro project and competition from private digital money such as stablecoins. Sweden is among the world's least cash-reliant countries — surveys show only 5% of Swedes used cash in their most recent purchase.
The e-krona is a central bank digital currency studied by the Riksbank to give the public a state-backed digital means of payment. Whether to issue one is a decision for parliament, and the bank's move is seen as a signal to advance the legislative discussion.
