New Mexico Wins Five Federal Education Grants Totaling $44.2 Million for Teacher Retention, Literacy Tutoring and Career Exploration

Santa Fe, New Mexico: The New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) announced on October 20 that the state has been awarded five competitive federal education grants totaling $44,226,017 to strengthen classroom instruction, improve how educators use assessment information, expand career exploration, help schools recruit and retain teachers, and expand high-impact literacy tutoring. All five grants come from U.S. Department of Education programs, with award periods of three to five years.

The largest award, $12,451,889 from the Teacher and School Leader Incentive Program, supports the state's Aspiring to Rewarding Careers (NM ARC) initiative, which gives experienced, effective teachers leadership and mentoring roles while they continue teaching, helping high-need schools address shortages through strategic staffing and performance-based compensation, from October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2029. A second grant of $9,986,328 from the Education Innovation and Research Program funds Project LEARN, expanding evidence-based, high-impact literacy tutoring with a focus on rural communities, from August 1, 2026 to July 31, 2029.

The remaining three awards are: $8,956,520 for From Early Exploration to the Workplace, a career pathways initiative run with the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions that will bring a 150-lesson career exploration curriculum, individualized academic and career planning and work-based learning to students in grades 6-12; $8,832,285 through the Teacher Quality Partnership program for NM-PATHs, a rural educator preparation hub serving rural and tribal communities and small districts through pre-apprentice, Educator Fellow and Teacher Apprentice routes; and $3,998,995 for the ILIAD initiative, which will connect curriculum, instruction and multiple assessments through common proficiency scales so educators can see more clearly what students know and where they need support.

"These grants will help us give educators clearer information about student learning, expand effective reading tutoring, connect students with career possibilities and create more ways for talented New Mexicans to teach in their own communities," said Public Education Secretary Mariana D. Padilla. "Together, these efforts will help more students see a path from what they learn in school to the futures they want to build."
