Follow-Up: Rep. Janelle Bynum Writes to ICE Asking to Pause Non-Emergency Enforcement in Bend and Deschutes County

U.S. Representative Janelle Bynum wrote to David Venturella, acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), on October 21 asking the agency to pause non-emergency enforcement operations in Bend and Deschutes County, the Salem Statesman Journal reported on October 22.

In the letter, Bynum cited the trauma in the local community after the Silver Rail Elementary School shooting. On October 15, three boys aged 5, 8 and 11 and teacher Megan Lambert were killed at Silver Rail Elementary; a 7-year-old student and teacher Becky Drury were seriously wounded; and the 16-year-old gunman, a former student at the school, was shot dead by a passing parent. The school district resumed classes on October 21, but Silver Rail Elementary remains closed indefinitely.
