Independent Gubernatorial Candidate Robert Brooks Pleads Not Guilty to Threat of Violence Charge: Judge Halves Bail as November 3 Election Nears
Oklahoma independent gubernatorial candidate Robert Brooks pleaded not guilty on Thursday in Rogers County court to a misdemeanor charge of threatening an act of violence. The judge granted the defense's request to halve his bail, reasoning that he is neither a flight risk nor a danger to the public and that conviction is unlikely; the bail was subsequently posted.
According to court documents, the charge stems from a January 7 incident on private property in Catoosa: Brooks went to the property and asked the owner about animal carcasses and skulls; after being asked to leave, he allegedly became angry, made threats and departed. Brooks's attorney denies the allegations. The case remains at the allegation stage, with no trial date set.
Brooks briefly served as Latimer County sheriff and is running as an independent in the November 3 gubernatorial election, campaigning on local government reform, property taxes and water issues. With Oklahoma's election entering its final two weeks, the misdemeanor case remains unresolved.
