Trump Heads to Sioux City Rally Today: Republicans Fight to Hold Senate Seat and Governor's Office in Iowa
President Trump traveled to Sioux City, Iowa, on October 22 for a rally supporting Republican midterm campaigns. Iowa was once solid Republican territory — Trump won it by 13 points two years ago — but the latest picture shows Republicans facing a tough fight in the state: the party must defend one U.S. Senate seat, three U.S. House districts and the governorship.
According to Reuters, Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson is locked in a tight Senate race with Democratic state Rep. Josh Turek; Hinson has publicly called for an 'immediate end' to the Iran war, saying Iowans should not pay for higher oil and food prices; Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn, both facing difficult re-elections, joined Democrats last month in voting to limit Trump's Iran war powers. In the governor's race, Democrat Rob Sand leads Republican Zach Lahn in recent polling, and Democrats are also targeting the open seat in Iowa's 2nd Congressional District. An October Marist poll found 42% of likely voters saying their finances had worsened over the past year; a Reuters/Ipsos poll on October 19 put Trump's approval rating at 31%, the lowest of his two terms, with 68% of respondents disapproving of his handling of the economy.
