Washington and Denmark Establish Formal Ties Around Maritime and Industrial Expertise
Washington Governor Bob Ferguson and Ambassador Karen Eva Abrahamsen, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Denmark in the United States, signed a cooperative agreement in Seattle on October 22, establishing the first cooperative framework between Washington state and Denmark and opening a new era in trade and partnership. According to the governor's office, the agreement establishes a framework for cooperation between the State of Washington and the Royal Danish Embassy on shared priorities including industrial decarbonization, water efficiency and reuse, commercialization of sustainable fuels, port development, maritime decarbonization, and circular manufacturing and industrial symbiosis. It will drive further technology exchange and innovation, business ties, and study and trade missions.
'From maritime technologies to industrial processes, Washington and Denmark have much to learn from each other,' Ferguson said. 'This agreement will support our communities, research institutions, and businesses in strengthening relationships with their Danish partners.' Abrahamsen said: 'Denmark and Washington State are combining their experience and strengths to create new opportunities for industries, ports and local communities.' Denmark is a world leader in vessel electrification with world-class maritime engineering talent and government-backed green shipping initiatives, including an ongoing ferry electrification system; Washington is likewise electrifying legacy and next-generation ferries, and together the programs are among the largest ferry electrification projects in the world. Washington was the first U.S. state to develop a state-supported industrial symbiosis program, and more than 25 Washington ports, cities and counties are pursuing the strategy. The signing took place during One Ocean Week, a global oceans conference in Seattle hosted by Washington Maritime Blue.
